About: Golden became a popular mining town after the discovery of precious metals in 1825, which ended up causing the first gold rush west of the Mississippi. Two steadily growing mining communities, Placer del Tuerto and Real de San Francisco, merged to form one large village that became Golden. Once Gold deposits began to dwindle by 1884, the population soon followed and by 1928 both the gold and population had diminished so much that the post office closed and Golden was then considered a ghost town.
